How to make your bed with a Coverlet.

Now that summer is right around the corner, many people will swap out their down comforter and duvet cover for a coverlet. What is a coverlet, you might ask? It is a short bedspread.

Here is a video that offers some insight into decorating your bed with a coverlet. For those of you at work that don’t want to let everyone know you’re watching a video, here is the written version.

You tube vidoe on decorating with a coverlet

The fact is many people do have air-conditioned homes so the room temperature of your house doesn’t vary too much between summer and winter, so keeping your duvet on the bed year round works just fine. As well, some people like the look of using a coverlet and having the down comforter and duvet cover rolled at the foot of the bed, this works fine as well. For those that want to not use the duvet in the summer, here you go.

Now the reason that coverlets are used rather than a bed spread (a cover that hangs to the floor) is that our friends, the mattress makers, have become a little overzealous with the thicknesses of mattresses. You will find mattresses as thin as 9” and as thick as 24” – so it is impossible for bedding manufacturers to accommodate all of the variations that exist. Therefore, coverlets are the answer. Now you can have a bedspread that goes to the floor made to fit your exact mattress size, but hold on to your wallet, you are likely going to spend over $1,500 for anything that looks good. Bedspreads were often more of a decorative piece and not that functional. A coverlet can be used as your blanket and top of the bed cover.

Back to coverlets!

They come in a few different construction styles:

  • Quilted – which consists of (3) layers, the underside, the batting (middle) and a top layer. These pieces are then quilted together with varying stitch patterns, giving it a more decorative finish.
  • Matelassé – (pronounced MAT-LA-ZAE) is a single layer of fabric, that is generally a little thinner that it’s quilted cousin.

When you purchase your coverlet, it may have some wrinkles in it, so the quick fix is put it on the bed and run an iron over it. If you’re lucky enough to have a steamer – this is a perfect way to get the wrinkles out.

Use the bed as an ironing board

Luxury bedding for the home, luxury linens

  • If you’re contemplating the purchase of a steamer – you may want to avoid the small hand held ones as most of them do not have enough horse power to do an effective job. A reasonably priced commercial grade steamer is Jiffy – you can find them on the web at www.jiffysteamer.com.

After you have placed your comforter on the bed, pull the edge that will be at the head of the bed all the way to the headboard. Then pull it back about 1/3 of the way down. Do the same with your flat sheet (if you have a decorative trim on your flat sheet, insure that you have placed it on the bed up side down so when it is folded back the embellishments can show.

Now add your shams, if you don’t have Euro shams, consider getting them as they add a nice, height and layered look to the bed. To see how we get the flanges to stand up on these, watch our blog post on floppy flanges.

 Adding shams to the bed

Now add your sleeping pillows – stand them on edge.

Put ypur pillowcases on the bed

If you want to put your duvet cover at the foot of the bed, simply place your duvet on the bed and fold it up, or roll it. If you decide you do not want to sleep with the duvet at night you can simply remove it and place it on a bench or chair that you might have in the room.

Caring for Luxury Bed Linens

We are frequently asked, “How should I care for my luxury bed linens”. To begin with, there is no doubt that luxurious high-quality sheets are made from fine grades of cotton; however, luxury bedding and sheets are somewhat robust. There are a few steps that you should take as well as avoid doing when laundering them. Taking these extra steps will extend the life of your bedding and will help keep it retain its’ super-soft feel and hand.

Here is our You Tube video that explains some things to consider and things to avoid doing. To see additional videos on bedding and luxury linen tips, please visit our You Tube channel and of course if you find them informative, please Like them and forward them to your friends and social networks.Like button For those that would prefer to read rather than watch a video, scroll down past this image to find our written version.

Caring for luxury bedding link

These tips are not exclusive to luxury linens, the reality is, most bed linens are made from cotton and these tips should be considered with any of your bed sheets and bedding.

Consider the following when washing (do not dry-clean your cotton bedding):

  • Use cold water.
  • Wash in a gentle cycle.
  • Do not overload the wash machine – only put one set of sheets in the washer. This yields a cleaner product. An over loaded wash machine will cause unnecessary tension on the fabric during the wash & spin cycle.
  • Allow the detergent to dilute in your machine wash water. Do not pour detergent directly on the bed linens, start your wash, add your detergent and allow the washer to fill around ½ way before you add your bed sheets or duvet.
  • If you need to spot any stains on your linens, dilute a small amount of detergent in a cup with some water and treat accordingly.
  • Do not use chlorine bleach as bleach can degrade and damage the cotton fiber.
  • Avoid harsh detergents.

Washing instructions for bed sheets

Products such as Tide or Cheer, as well as many other detergents, contain what detergent manufacturers refer to as “BRIGHTENERS”. Brighteners are essentially bleach, see the below ingredients list from Tide & Cheer.

Don't use a harsh detergent on you fine linens

How to care for fime linens

Use a mild detergent. We happen to like a product called Le Blanc Linen Wash.

Le Blanc linen wash

Specialty detergents can be found at almost any luxury linen boutique or better department stores or you can purchase Le Blanc Linen Wash on our site www.verolinens.com.

As far as drying your linens:

  • Use a medium or low heat.
  • Do not overload the drier.
  • Do not over dry – take them out when they are slightly damp to the touch.
  • Once they are dry – don’t let them sit in the bottom of the drier as this will only create more wrinkles.
  • Hand press them as you fold them up, or put them right on the bed.

Get your Luxury Pillow Shams to look like the ones you see in Elle Décor

You have made an investment in your luxury bed linens, sheets and shams, so naturally you want your bedding to look its best. Among other bedding questions, many people have challenges to get the luxurious super soft cotton flanges to stand on edge (vs. flopping over).

Okay, you purchased decorative shams that looked perfect in the photograph or at the store, only to get them home and have them look sad on your bed?

The first thing to remember is to use a full pillow insert in the sham.  Many will use their old, worn out pillows to fill these shams.  This does not adequately fill the sham causing the fabric (especially in the corners) to sag.  The best type of insert to use is a overstuffed (full)  feather pillow.  It is inexpensive, yet fills the sham and corners of the pillow sham perfectly.

Floppy flanges

We have put together this short video to demonstrate how to easily get these delicate flanges to stand up.  Simply click on the below image and you will be re-directed to one of our You Tube videos that show how to accomplish this. Visit our You Tube channel where we have a variety of videos that offer additional bedding tips.

For those of you that would prefer to read about this tip, here you go!

Whether you are placing Euro shams, Standard shams or King shams on your bed this tip applies. Many people grab their shams from the top edge of the flange and then place the sham on their bed as shown below.

Luxury Bed Linens, Italian Bedding, Luxury Bedding for your home

The result is the flanges flop over.

This is because when one picks the sham up from the top edge a void is created between the sham and the pillow insert.

Now flip the sham to the correct orientation, while still holding the excess fabric at the bottom.

The Best Duvet Cover Construction Style…

There are a number of choices available for the top of the bed. Duvet covers are very popular and should be used to cover your down comforter. There is a variety of things that one should look for or consider when selecting one.

Here is a short video that provides some insight.

Luxury Duvet Cover

For those that prefer to read, here you go.

Duvet covers are used to cover your down comforter. They come in a variety of different fabrics from cotton, linen, and silks to synthetics.

Duvet covers for the most part provide two benefits:

A layer of protection for the down comforter

  • Down comforters are typically all white and they can become stained as they will absorb makeup, body oil and other things that they come in contact with.
    • However, regular washings of a down comforter will degrade the life of the down comforter because of the friction created in both the washing and drying cycles as the down abrades against itself. In addition, washing a duvet cover is far easier than a down comforter.
    • Many duvet covers and most down comforters are washable.

Decoration to the top of the bed

  • A duvet is likely the single largest visible item in a bedroom and is a nice way to bring some color and interest into the room. Unlike a bedspread, which is usually a decorative piece (as it is taken off at night), a duvet/comforter is both decorative and functional. Comforters offer light weight, warmth and are pleasant to sleep under.

wellmade bed higher res

There are a few common types of constructions used in duvet covers.  Here is my recommendation on what to “look for”.

The fabrics wash ability and weight

  • Certainly, having a fabric that needs to be dry-cleaned is not the end of the world, but having a nice cotton fabric that is washable makes the cleaning process quick and inexpensive.
    • Something that should be considered is the weight of the fabric used for a duvet cover. Many interior designers and individuals like to use textured fabric for duvet covers. However, here is a word of caution; with texture comes weight.
    • The beauty of a down comforter is warmth without weight.
    • Unquestionably, texture can add interest to the look of the bed, but some of the upholstery grade fabrics used can result in a duvet cover that weighs 15 pounds. Whereas, a sheet-weight fabric will typically only weigh a pound or two.
    • Not only do people not like having 15 pounds of weight on their chest, back or legs, the weight of the fabric compresses all of the air out of the down comforter – which is what traps body heat and results in warmth.
      • Look for sheet weight fabrics in your duvet cover.
        • Cotton (sheet weight) is washable as well as durable.
  • Be careful of silk fabrics, they look and feel great; however, silks are costly, snag easily and typically need to be dry-cleaned.

Size of the duvet cover

  • Because of the popular super-thick mattresses, consider a duvet that has flanges on the sides and foot (vs. a simple sack construction).
  • A duvet that has flanges on 3 sides (sides & foot) is superior as it will give you extra coverage.  The flange, which are 3” to 4” can provide an additional 8” of extra coverage for a mattress.

The closure of the duvet

  • Look for hidden button closures (not zippers, as they can jam). A hidden button closure provides a nicer, cleaner, more finished look.
    • The buttons should always go at the foot of the bed (unless there is some decorative reason for placement elsewhere on the duvet).
    • Sizes of duvets & down comforters are somewhat standardized –they do vary by an inch or two.

How to get rid of wrinkles in your bed sheets or linens!

There is nothing like the feel of 100% cotton next to your skin, which is why it is the most popular fabric used in bed linens. Unfortunately, 100% cotton bed linens can wrinkle.

Here is our You Tube Video demonstrating what you can do to get rid of wrinkles.

Luxury Linens, Fine Linens, the best bed sheets, 100% cotton sheets,

For those that would rather read, here you go;

Luxury linens are a wonderful thing (Italian Bed Linens are even better) however, they can wrinkle.

Luxury bed linens, Italian bed linens, the best sheets,

You have made an investment in your bedding so you will want it to look great.

Ironing is the best way to get wrinkles out, not only do the bed linens look great but the ironing also makes the fabric feel better as the hot iron lays the nap of the fabric down, so, that it feels even nicer against your skin. However, not everyone has the time to iron or the inclination.

Having them professionally laundered is something to consider. You want laundered not dry-clean them, as the harsh chemicals used in dry-cleaning can harm the cotton fabric.

However, for those that do not want to do either of these, this quick tip works great when you make the bed each week or mid week when you want to touch it up a little.

Get yourself a spray bottle of water. Water is a wrinkle release. You may want to consider getting fragranced water as well, there are many to choose from and they come in several fragrances as well. They make the bed smell great.

Fine Bedding, Luxury Duvets, Bed shams

Regardless, if you use fragranced water or plain tap water, the result is the same.

Put your fitted sheet on the bed, then give it a light spritz of water. Now put your flat sheet on the bed and tuck in the foot and sides. The trick to this tip is putting a little tension on the sheet (the fitted sheet will already have enough tension in it), simply grab one of the top corners and pull it slightly taunt. Then give it a spritz of water.

The best sheets, Vero Linens,, Luxury Italian Duvet coversGo to the other side of the bed and repeat the process. Then put you duvet or coverlet on the bed.

Now grab one of your pillowcases (with the pillow inside of it) by the cuff, suspend it with one hand (from the cuff). Then give it a light spritz on both sides, repeat the process with your other pillows or shams.

Luxury bed sheets,

You can also do the same thing with your duvet cover.

Well we hope this helps and as always, please feel free to call or email us with you bedding related questions.

How to make the perfect looking bed

You have made an investment in your luxury Italian bed linens and sheets, so you will want to make the bed look as inviting as it feels.

We put together this short video (below) to demonstrate how we do it.

Please click the like button on You Tube as well as subscribe to our You Tube channel.

Luxury Italian bed linens, European bed linens, the best bed sheets, great bed sheets, fine bed linens,

For those that would rather read – please read on.

To start, place your flat sheet on the bed upside down so that when you pull it back any decorative features that you might have on the sheet will be visible.

Flat Sheet, fitted sheet, down comforter, duvet cover

Place your Duvet all the way up to the headboard. Now fold back the duvet cover and flat sheet about 1/3 of the way back. You will need to adjust this from both sides of the bed.

Luxury Italian bed linens, European bed linens, the best bed sheets, great bed sheets, fine bed linens,

Now grab your Euro shams – don’t grab them from the top, rather grab them from the bottom and be sure to shake the pillow insert all the way down – eliminating any gap between the sham cover and the insert. Any void of fabric may result in a floppy flange – watch the above video if what I have written is not clear.

Luxury Italian bed linens, European bed linens, the best bed sheets, great bed sheets, fine bed linens,

If you don’t own Euro Shams, consider getting them, not only do they add a great look, layer and elevation to the bed, they are functional in that you can lean against them for back support and comfort if you ever read or watch TV in bed.

Use 2 or 3 Euro shams on a Queen bed or 3 and 4 on a King bed.

Now place your sleeping pillows, try to place them on edge rather than lying down.

Luxury Italian bed linens, European bed linens, the best bed sheets, great bed sheets, fine bed linens,

If you want a little more decoration, consider getting a few decorative pillows or some boudoir shams (12” x 16”) to place in front of the sleeping pillows.

Voila!  Bed Perfect.

Luxury Italian bed linens, European bed linens, the best bed sheets, great bed sheets, fine bed linens,

As well, consider swapping out your Euro Shams and decorative pillows seasonally to obtain an entirely different look for your bed. Use jewel tones in the fall and winter and pastels in the spring and summer.  This is a very inexpensive way to get an entirely new look to your bed and bedroom.

We hope this helps, and as always, please feel free to email or call us with any of your bedding – relates questions.

Remember the best sheets in the World are made in Italy and Vero Linens is one of Italy’s best linen manufacturers.

Preventing Down Comforters from slipping inside your Duvet Cover.

Whether you have department store bedding our luxury bed linens; the fact is, down comforters can slip around a bit inside the duvet cover.

Below we have provided a short video that demonstrates how to easily secure your down comforter inside your duvet cover.

Luxury Bed Linens, Italian Bed Linens, High thread count linens

For those that would rather read than watch video the here is the written version.

This problem can be caused by a couple of factors, but the two main reasons are:

  1. When people pull their comforter up towards their face while they are in bed, they frequently only grab the top edge of the duvet cover rather than both the duvet cover and comforter. This creates a void between these two pieces. Over the course of a few nights; a large gap can develop between the duvet cover and the down comforter.
  2. This gap can also be exacerbated by gravity.  Consider that a typical duvet and down comforter drape off the end/foot of the bed, generally between 12” to 18” – gravity pulls on both of these pieces. However, because the down comforter often weighs more than the duvet coupled with the possibility of a person pulling on the duvet cover at the other end, the down comforter sometimes finds its way to the bottom or foot of the duvet cover.

Here is what you can do to remedy this.

Get yourself 4 small pieces of scrap fabric – two about 3” long and ¼” wide, the other 2 should be about ¼” wide and 10” to 12” long.

Italian bed linens, Luxury bed sheets, the best bed linens

  • Take the smaller pieces and sew them (as shown below) across the two top corners of the down comforter – be careful to sew only on the outside edge of the down comforter. If you puncture the comforter shell or ticking, you may find that the down inside the comforter will escape from this area.

The best italian bed sheets, fine linens, luxury duvet covers

  • Now turn your duvet cover inside out and at the top (2) corners (the ones that are at the head of the bed) take the larger piece of fabric and sew in place as shown below – you want to sew it in the middle of the scrap fabric.

Great bed sheets, luxury duvet covers

  • Now bring your down comforter and duvet cover together where the strap are sewn in place.
  • Take one of the duvet cover straps and bring the strap under the strap sewn into the down comforter.
  • Then tie the duvet cover straps and tie them in a bow like a shoelace.

Luxury Linens, Italian Bed Linen, High Thread Count Sheets,

  • Repeat this step at the other comer of the duvet cover and down comforter.
  • Then simply pull the duvet cover over the down comforter and close it up.

Your good to go.

We see some people use ties in all four corners but this really isn’t necessary because down comforters down slide up the bed

Keep in mind that if your down comforter and duvet cover are not the same size, they will not slide back and forth across the bed.

We hope this helps and as always, please email or call us with any of your bedding – related questions.

Thread Count and what it means in your Luxury Linens!

Many people use thread count as one of the primary considerations when purchasing a set of sheets and also believe that if a set of sheets indicates it contains 1,000 thread count fabric, then they are considered luxury linens. Well often this is not the case.

We made the below video to explain why you might want to reconsider thread count as the criteria for selecting your next set of luxury linens.

Luxury Italian Linens and sheets -Thumbnail

For those that would rather read than watch a video – here you go.

Thread count is determined by multiplying the number of warp threads by the weft threads found in a square inch of fabric.

Luxury Bed Linens - Warp and Weff

But, let’s digress a minute. To begin with, be aware, that not all cotton is created equal. Cotton, as with many products, is graded based on specific characteristics. With cotton; fiber length & diameter, color and tensile strength are some of the primary characteristics that determine its’ grade.  The longer, thinner stronger fibers are the ones that find their way into luxury linens. Cotton fibers that contain these better attributes are more expensive, however, they produce the finest sheets and linens relative to hand, drape and wear.

Here is our hamburger analogy. There are Mc Donald’s hamburgers and there are hamburgers made from Kobe beef. Both beef – both hamburgers –  we hope you see the point – there is no comparison between the products. The same is true with Cotton.

Below is a photo of two different magnified cotton textiles – one Italian woven from high-grade cotton and one from China woven from a low-grade cotton.

Egyptian Cotton Sheets, Fine Bed Linens,

Notice the inconsistent thread diameter and weave, as well, as the nubs. The nubs represent areas where future pilling will occur. The inconsistent weave results in a scratchy, course fabric.

With finer luxury bed linens, typically only the finest grades of cotton are used. Another point to be aware of is just because the label indicates Egyptian Cotton, doesn’t mean the sheet contains 100% Egyptian. A sheet can contain as little as 10% Egyptian Cotton and still carry the Egyptian Cotton label. Even worse, the 10% used can be a substandard grade of Egyptian Cotton.

This explains why there are 200 thread count luxury Italian sheets made from exceptional grades of cotton that feel nicer than 1,000 thread count sheets or linens made from substandard grades of cotton.

As with most things, you get what you pay for, this is true in luxury bed linens. So, when you see 1,000 thread count sheets selling for $60, we hope you keep this article in mind. True, Italian luxury linens made from great grades of cotton with high-thread counts are going to cost you over $1,200, unless you consider Vero Linens. Our sheets do not carry any retail mark-up, so they can be purchased for a lot less than other luxury bed linens and sheets.

We hope this clarifies the thread count issue and as always please feel free to call or email us with any of your bedding related questions.

Why should you choose Vero Linens when purchasing your next set of luxury bed linens? Click on our You Tube video (below) which explains why Vero provides the best value and luxury bed linens in the market and how we can sell them for a whole lot less then our competitors.

How to tell when it is time to replace your Down Comforter?

As with most things, Down Comforters wear out.

Here is a brief You Tube video that shows how you can tell if your Down Comforter needs to be replaced (click on image).

Luxury Linens, Italian Linens, Down Comforters

For those that would prefer to read, here is the text version.

  • A good life for a Down Comforter is between 8 and 10 years.
  • The next time you clean your Duvet Cover (after you separate the Duvet from the Down Comforter) hold the Comforter up to a room light or a window where sunlight is coming in.

Luxury Bed Linens, Down Cmforters

As shown above, if it is worn out, you will notice the compartments, specifically in the area that would cover your shoulders, will have far less down (if any) then those on the outboard edges of the Comforter.

  • If you find that all of the Down is missing in these compartments, all you’re sleeping under is a couple layers of cotton sheeting or the Comforter ticking.
  • The reason that they wear out in this area is due to the friction created from the down cluster abrading or rubbing against each other as a person tosses and turns under the comforter while sleeping.
  • The clusters rub against each other under tension created by your shoulders and the Down simply turns to dust, which ultimately migrates out of the comforter shell and Duvet Cover.
  • To get optimum life from your Down Comforter, avoid laying on top of it as this increases wear.
  • Some companies may re-fill them, but the shipping cost (back and forth), materials and the labor to have them re-done is often more than to just replace the Down Comforter.
  • Should you decide you need to replace your Comforter, here is a blog that we did a few months ago which identifies what to look for in a Down Comforter when purchasing a new one https://www.verolinens.com/blog/is-one-down-comforter-better-than-another/.
